                                                    Intrepid Museum

The Intrepid was used for many purposes in War World II. It was used as a battleship and also held many US Navy. To learn more about the Intrepid keep reading.
One type of aircraft that was kept on the flight deck on the Intrepid was the Grumman E-1B Tracer. It was used as a carrier base early-warning aircraft. They started to build it around 1954 and ent into service around 1958. It has a randome that holds a dish-type radar system that has a search radius of 250 miles. It served from 1958 to 1977. It was typically on the ship for 19 years while it was in use.
The Berthing deck was where the sailors slept, socialized, and relaxed. This deck let the sailors have down time and a break from their busy lives. It was a "must have" on the ship during war time because that's where the sailors slept and they had to have somewhere to sleep. All soldiers spent time on this deck because they could sleep and relax there. This deck was so important because if they didn't have it, then all the soldiers would be tired and cranky all day. They also had lockers in there which they usually kept clothes, a journal, photographs, letters home, blue jacket's manual, shoes & polish,a shaving kit, soap, and a toothbrush. Also, over 30 men were placed in one room.

Three things that I learned during the Intrepid trip were:
They had a ready room where they would sit in chairs for hours ready to do their job. It is important for people to know because they now know what the Navy had to experience when in war. The Intrepid was also known as the Fighting "I". This is important because if a person is talking about the Intrepid and uses the nickname, Fighting "I', then they know what the person is talking about. The Hangar Deck could hold 50 air crafts. This is important for people to know because it may be useful and if someone asks you about the Intrepid's Hangar deck you know something about it.

              Eight Ports:
  • Port one - Newport News,Virginia: April 26,1943. First launch.
  • Port two - Pearl Harbor, Hawaii: January 10, 1944. Began "her" missions.
  • Port three - Western Pacific Ocean, Philippines: November 25, 1944. Japanese Kamikaze Attack.
  • Port four - Ulithi, Micronesia: March 13, 1945. Made powerful strikes against airfields on Kyushu.
  • Port five - North Atlantic Ocean: May 24, 1962. Went to Space Recovery.
  • Port six - North Atlantic Ocean: March 23, 1965. Gemini 3 Space Mission Splash Down.
  • Port seven - Egypt: June 1, 1967. Passed through Suez Canal.
  • Port eight - New York, New York Pier 86: August 3, 1982. Became the Intrepid Museum.

Going to the Intrepid Museum as a class trip has taught all of us many things. It went through a lot to protect and serve our country. It was fascinating and we learned a lot from this wonderful experience. We all should be proud that we had such an amazing ship represent us in times of war.
